The Community Cooks Project: Empowering Families Through Scratch Cooking
The Community Cooks workshop series was one of Slow Food Wisconsin Southeastās most impactful grassroots initiatives. Designed to bridge the gap between affordable local agriculture and household nutrition, the program brought volunteer chefs, community leaders, and local families together in neighborhood kitchens across Milwaukee.
Highlighted extensively by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Community Cooks demystified scratch cooking by demonstrating that wholesome, seasonal, and heritage meals could be prepared affordably without reliance on ultra-processed convenience foods.
Core Workshop Pillars
Seasonal Produce Utilization
Teaching families how to prepare seasonal Wisconsin vegetables, squash, hearty greens, and root crops obtained through local CSA shares and farmers markets.
Whole Grains & Fermentation
Introducing home cooks to sourdough starter maintenance, wild yeast baking, and lacto-fermentation to preserve fresh seasonal bounty affordably.
Knife Skills & Food Prep
Building foundational culinary confidence so participants could efficiently butcher pastured meats, break down whole birds, and prepare nutrient-dense bone broths.
Budget-Friendly Scaling
Scaling recipes to feed multi-generational households while minimizing waste through smart freezer planning and batch brining.
